Monk Habits for Artists: Living and Creating in Uncertain Times –
a discussion led by Eric Kaufman

Making art can be difficult in ideal circumstances, but making art during a global pandemic can feel like an impossibility.  What can we do, as artists and Christians, to help us be faithful in our artistic practices?

On Friday, October 2, at 7:30pm, Eric Kaufman will lead us in a discussion entitled, “Monk Habits for Artists.”  Eric draws upon his experience as both an artist and a spiritual director to offer a toolbox of ideas and resources that will offer encouragement to artists of any medium.  There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions, as well.  Join us to learn more about how to craft a faithful artistic practice.

Have you ever been part of Inktober?
Would you like to participate in Inktober this year?

31 days, 31 ink drawings – sounds like a great way to begin a practice!

If you’re curious about Inktober, or you’d just like to learn more about drawing with pen and ink, join Christ Church artist Caleigh Taylor for an online inking class Monday, Sept 28, at 7:30pm.  You’ll learn some techniques and enjoy art-making in community with other CC artists.

Fall Book Club: My Name is Asher Lev

“Asher Lev is a Ladover Hasid who keeps kosher, prays three times a day and believes in the Ribbono Shel Olom, the Master of the Universe. Asher Lev is an artist who is compulsively driven to render the world he sees and feels, even when it leads him to blasphemy. In this stirring and often visionary novel, Chaim Potok traces Asher’s passage between these two identities, the one consecrated to God, the other subject only to the imagination.”

Billy Hollis will lead us in our fall book club discussion over the classic bestselling novel, My Name is Asher Lev.  You can find it at the Austin Public Library, on Kindle and Audible, at Amazon, and your local bookstore.  Mark your calendars now for November 12 at 7:30pm!

Join a group to attend Hutchmoot: Homebound | October 9-11

Hutchmoot is an annual gathering of artists of all kinds, born out of the ministry of The Rabbit Room and artist Andrew Peterson.  Like so many other gatherings in 2020, this one has gone online, too, but the silver lining to its online manifestation is that the price has dropped significantly, and attendance is unlimited!  Local artist Phaedra Taylor and her husband, professor and author David Taylor, are two of the many talented session leaders.  Find out more on the Hutchmoot: Homebound website.

Are you planning to attend Hutchmoot: Homebound?

If you’re planning to attend and you’d like to be part of a group of Christ Church artists who attend “together” in some way, and/or follow up afterward to process your experience,  contact us to be added to the group.  We will try to attend together, or at least talk about it afterward.  We’d love to have you join us!
